Our photography tour to Carcassonne will take place in June 2025 with Damien Demolder.
It’s hardly a surprise that the fairy tale towers of Carcassonne’s ancient Cité are often credited as the design inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle, as the tall stone wells, cone peaks and fluttering flags are straight out of a children’s story book. And being considerably more attractive than the real thing, the narrow streets and cobbled courtyards were used in scenes meant to depict Nottingham Castle in Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. So, naturally it is a fabulous place to take photographs.

Carcassonne is really two cities separated by the River Aude, but connected by two bridges that provide picturesque views of both sides. The ancient Cité, nestling on the west bank hill-top is protected by its dramatic stone fortifications and looms over the river offering an aerial view of the surrounding countryside and the new town on the east bank of the Aude. Here the word ‘new’ is relative of course, because the ‘new’ town is only new in comparison to the Cité – it dates from the middle of the 11th century, while the Cité began life 100 years BC when the Romans identified it as a good spot.
Our tour will take in both parts of Carcassonne as we explore the ancient and slightly less ancient architecture, sites, markets and people. We will be surrounded by history and drama at every turn, mixed with a modern France and a modern French people. We’ll spend time looking at the way the light in this part of southern France lifts some elements and how the deep shadows of the day can hide others, and how we can use these contrasts to create stunning three dimensional images. We’ll concentrate on how we frame our subjects and how we use elements of the environment to design eye-catching compositions to draw attention to the things that interest us.
Both parts of the city are as interesting in the evening as they are during the day, and there will be great opportunities for sunrise views for the early risers and sunset views for those who prefer their bed in the mornings. The tour is suitable for those who love beautiful architecture, travel, street, landscapes and good wine – Carcassonne really does have it all.
The tour will finish in the evening of 23 June 2025. Accommodation includes the night of 23 June, as recommended return flights are scheduled for 24 June.
