Our Stockholm Photography Tour will take place in September and will be led by Charlie Waite and Astrid McGechan.

Sweden’s capital Stockholm stretches across 14 islands, which are connected by 57 bridges, giving this waterfront city its unique charm. Our tour will give us the chance to explore Stockholm’s multi-faceted character, as we will take in grand views of its skyline, fascinating architecture, and the unique art installations in the ‘Tunnelbana’, the city’s Underground railway network, often dubbed the world’s longest art installation.

We will be based in Gamla Stan, the island on which Stockholm’s old town was built. It is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe and features cobble-stone streets, narrow alleyways and colourful houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. We will explore Gamla Stan both during the day time and after dark, to indulge in some low-light photography.

In Stockholm, we can find the world’s oldest open-air museum, where we can delve deeper into Sweden’s history, discovering what life was like in centuries gone by. Back in the city centre, we’ll head to the Stadshuset, Stockholm’s City Hall, which was built with 8 million bricks during the period of national romanticism in architecture. Climbing up the tower will present us with the best view of Gamla Stan.

We won’t be short of inspiration, but there is nothing quite like a good exhibition to feed our creativity – Fotografiska is bound to have something exciting in store for us. We can visit there anytime during the evening, it’s open until midnight!

Skogskyrkogården is a large forested cemetery with UNESCO World Heritage Site status, which was opened around 100 years ago and incorporates the features of the local landscape. The natural beauty is breathtaking, and we can explore the Almhöjden Garden and the tree avenue.

In Stockholm, one must go underground. The city’s metro system might as well be called a gallery – though one that is 110km long! Almost all stations feature some kind of art installation, from sculptures and mosaics to paintings, engravings, and reliefs. Some artists address pressing political, environmental or human rights issues, others concentrate on simply improving the experience of travelling.

Charlie and Astrid will be your tutors for this city tour. With no shortage of subject matter, and their expert guidance, you can let your creativity loose, safe in the knowledge that you will return with images to treasure.
